Mozambique is a country that refuses to be rushed. Its allure lies in the rhythm of its landscapes, the warmth of its people, and the richness of its culture. Here, the Indian Ocean meets a coastline that stretches for over 1,500 miles, unveiling secluded beaches, vibrant markets, and a culinary scene with Portuguese, African, and Arabic influences. From the energy of capital city Maputo to the untouched beauty of Tofo and Inhaca Island, Mozambique is an immersion—one that yields to those willing to witness it.

Whether you’re drawn to the soulful beats of Kizomba music, the fresh seafood prepared with generations-old techniques, or the promise of adventure on the country’s remote islands, Mozambique delivers.

This is your guide to the best places to stay, eat, and explore in one of Africa’s most enchanting coastal nations.

Where to Stay

Catembe Gallery Hotel, Maputo

Perched across the bay from Maputo, the Catembe Gallery Hotel offers a serene escape from the city’s bustle. Accessible via a short ferry ride, this boutique hotel provides panoramic views of the Maputo skyline juxtaposed against the tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean. The hotel’s art-adorned interiors reflect Mozambique’s vibrant culture, while its waterfront restaurant serves a fusion of local and international cuisine, making it a haven for both relaxation and culinary delight.

Nahyeeni Lodge, Inhaca Island

Also, a short boat ride or private charter from Maputo, Inhaca Island is an unspoiled escape where time slows. The island is a haven for marine lovers, offering pristine beaches, excellent snorkeling opportunities, and some of Mozambique’s most vibrant coral reefs. Nahyeeni Lodge, nestled on this island, offers exclusive accommodations with breathtaking ocean vistas. Imagine unwinding by the infinity pool that seamlessly blends into the horizon. This eco-lodge is where barefoot luxury meets sustainability.

San Martinho Beach Club, Praia do Bilene

Bilene is the perfect choice for those who want tranquility without sacrificing accessibility.   It is a 2 hour drive from Maputo. Known for the Uembje Lagoon, which stretches for kilometers with calm waters, San Martinho Beach Club is a luxurious retreat offering direct access to it. The resort features elegantly appointed villas equipped with modern amenities, catering to both families and couples seeking a tranquil getaway. Activities range from kayaking and paddleboarding on the lagoon to exploring nearby dunes, ensuring a blend of adventure and relaxation.

Baia Sonambula Guest House, Tofo Beach

This small coastal town is famous for its diving scene, where you can swim alongside whale sharks and manta rays in some of Africa’s most biodiverse waters. Baia Sonambula Guest House epitomizes coastal charm, offering intimate accommodations just steps from the sandy shores. Guests can start their day with a sumptuous breakfast on the terrace overlooking the ocean, followed by diving excursions, or basking in the sun on Tofo’s expansive beaches.

Where to Eat and Drink

Dhow – Elevated Dining Overlooking the Ocean

Perched above the Maputo shoreline, Dhow is a feast for the eyes and palate. The open-air terrace offers sweeping ocean views, and the menu fuses Mozambican seafood traditions with modern flair. Think octopus carpaccio drizzled in citrus, prawn curry slow-cooked in coconut milk, and perfectly grilled fish, paired with a selection of fine wines and handcrafted cocktails.

Txhapo Txapho – Maputo’s Hidden Gem

Tucked away in the heart of the city, Txhapo Txapho is a celebration of Mozambique’s culinary heritage. The name itself, meaning “a little bit of everything,” is a fitting descriptor of the menu—where tapas-style plates allow diners to sample a range of local flavors. From piri-piri prawns to cassava-based dishes infused with fragrant spices, the food here is bold, fresh, and deeply authentic.

How to Spend Your Time

Explore Maputo’s Cultural Scene

Maputo is a city that pulsates with energy, and nowhere is that more evident than at the Kwetu Neighbourhood Market. Held monthly, this vibrant market is a fusion of music, art, and community, featuring local vendors selling handmade crafts, artisanal food stalls, and performances by some of Mozambique’s top female DJs. It’s a snapshot of the city’s creative pulse—one that is as exciting as it is inspiring.

Kizomba Nights – A Dance Culture Like No Other

Mozambique is one of the best places to experience Kizomba, a dance style that originated in Angola but has found a devoted following here. Should you find yourself in Xai-Xai, Gilda Chicavele dance studio is staffed with instructors who will break down the smooth, sensuous movements that define Kizomba. If you’re looking for a more immersive experience, convince a local to whirl you onto the dancefloor where the music plays late and the atmosphere is electric.

Dhow Safaris and Snorkeling Adventures

A dhow safari along Mozambique’s coast is one of the most intimate ways to experience its untouched beauty. These traditional wooden sailing boats (known as a dhow) take travelers to hidden sandbanks, secluded beaches, and vibrant coral reefs where snorkeling reveals a world of marine life in technicolor. Whether exploring the islands near Vilanculos or setting off from Inhaca, a dhow safari is a journey into the soul of Mozambique’s coastline.

Visit Gorongosa National Park

Mozambique is often thought of as a beach destination. But, its interior holds one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife conservation success stories—Gorongosa National Park. Once devastated by civil conflict, the park has been revitalized and is now home to thriving populations of lions, elephants, and antelope. A safari here is a chance to witness conservation in action. It’s set against a backdrop of dramatic landscapes that range from lush wetlands to rugged mountains.

Diving with Giants

For the adventurous traveler, diving in Mozambique is an experience like no other. Tofo is one of the best places in the world to see whale sharks and manta rays year-round. Ponta do Ouro offers encounters with dolphins in crystal-clear waters. The marine biodiversity here is staggering, making it a must-visit for divers and snorkelers alike.

When to Visit Mozambique

Mozambique’s tropical climate ensures warm temperatures year-round. However, the best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you’re after.

  • May to October (Dry Season) – This is the ideal time for beach lovers and safari-goers alike. The weather is cooler, the skies are clear, and the wildlife viewing in Gorongosa is at its best.
  • November to April (Green Season) – While this period brings some rain, it also transforms the landscape into a lush paradise. It’s an excellent time for diving, as the waters are calm and visibility is at its peak. However, if you’re traveling during January and February, be mindful of the cyclone season along the coast.
