Emotional wellness is the ability to handle the stresses of life and adapt to change. Some key components of building on your emotional wellness are resilience, stress reduction, quality sleep, social connections, coping mechanisms and being mindful. Let’s talk about freeing ourselves from guiding emotions.
Practicing Mindfulness for Emotional Wellness
Being aware and present helps manage stress and focus on the current moments. This can be achieved in many ways including meditation, journaling or yoga. Mindfulness helps us to stay present and not get caught up in negative thought patterns. Practicing gratitude, regularly reflecting on the things you are grateful for can help to shift the focus from negative to positive. A great way to practice is to name three to five things you are grateful for every day. This helps to reframe what you are focusing and see what is versus something you might be telling yourself.
Stress reducing techniques
One of the main beliefs I have is that everything is connected. All of these facets build upon one another. Reducing stress will have positive effects on your total health and wellness. Your practice could include:
- Exercise
- Deep breathing exercises
- Hobbies you love
Regularly practicing stress reduction can help to keep your emotions balanced. Ensuring that you get quality sleep each night can significantly improve your mood and energy levels. This might involve setting a regular bedtime, limiting screen time before bed, or creating a relaxing pre-sleep routine. Sleep allows us to recharge, reset for the next day and can increase our capacity to handle stress in a healthier way.
Healthy coping skills
Developing healthy ways to cope with life is very important for your emotional wellness. Not only is it a great thing to learn personally, it also affects our communication and relationships with others. Some activities to improve how you cope can include arts and crafts, going to therapy, and music.
Creating time for yourself can help address the issues and create coping skills that work for you. Make sure that you are engaging in activities that help you to relax and recharge. Self-care is an important part of maintaining emotional wellness. Be kind to yourself and others as you respect the fact that everyone will choose what and how they celebrate.
