Five white wine regions

As winter continues on across the United States, wine lovers consistently start transitioning from crisp, cool white wines to bold, cozy reds. However, there are many white wines from regions around the world that deserve another look, even in the coldest of temperatures. These white wine regions produce wines with some of the structure, depth and mouthfeel drinkers expect from red wines. And if consumers who don’t enjoy the drying sensation or high alcohol levels of deep red wines, these white wines can be a game-changer..

Why White Wines Work in Winter

The reason many love red wines in winter comes down to structure and food pairings. Red wines have a high alcohol by volume (ABV) which creates a warming sensation. Additionally, the serving temperatures of red wine are typically higher, generally 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit. Lastly, red wines go great with warm winter dishes like soups, meaty dishes, pasta and chili.

However, certain white wines leverage the same techniques as red wines, while maintaining the qualities consumers love about white wines. For example, full-bodied Chardonnay from the warm regions of South Africa are at their best around 50 degrees and can work well with meat-focused dishes.

White wines from moderate to warm climates offer the desired characteristics here. Wines from these regions are medium to full bodied, have higher alcohol and pair well with denser dishes than lighter white wines.

Here are the top white wine regions for winter.

Five White Wine Regions

  1. California

The key to a great white wine region is ideal climate and top-tier winemaking. The best of California wine has both. Particularly Napa Valley and Sonoma are dry, moderate to warm climates that are ideal for medium to full bodied wines.

While Napa is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Sonoma is ideal for Pinot Noir, both have amazing expressions of Chardonnay. Chardonnay from Napa is often full bodied, with additional texture from the use of oak and MFL or malolactic fermentation. Sonoma Chardonnay often has more finesse and lively acidity, ideal to cut through the fat of most winter dishes. California also produces top-tier Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Semillon.

For great California white wines, consider Chardonnay from Theopolis Vineyards (called Cuvee Blanc), Sauvignon Blanc from Bodkin Wines or Chenin Blanc from D.Wade Cellars. These and others are available on our Sip Consciously Directory!

  1. South Africa

South Africa is an emerging wine market but the wines are world class. In much of the country, it is difficult to grow grapes because it is so warm. However, areas near the coast can be cooler due to the ocean and the wind system, known as the Cape Doctor. Because of this, it is easy for wines to ripen, and wines that ripen well tend to have higher body and texture. Perfect for winter white wines.

South Africa is famous for Chenin Blanc, known in the country as “Steen”. In fact, 50% of vineyards planted to Chenin Blanc are in this country. Chenin Blanc is known for its body, richness and texture. The country also grows Chardonnay well, along with Sauvignon Blanc.

Aslina Wines is based in Stellenbosch and makes incredible Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Also consider Kumusha Wines which makes Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and a bold white blend called Flame Lily. IBest Wines is another brand to look out for based in Stellenbosch.

White wines from South Africa

  1. Oregon

Just one state north of California is one of the top producing wine regions in the United States. Oregon’s wine regions are most famously between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Cascade mountains to the east. The most important region is the Willamette Valley, with a few regions in the southern part of the state, such as Rogue Valley.

White wines from Oregon include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. Consider wines from Maison Noir, Chosen Family (owned by NBA stars Channing Frye and Kevin Love) or Meadows Estate.

  1. Vinho Verde, Portugal

Consumers may not be familiar with the wines of Portugal. However, this region is known for its white wines, in addition to the famous fortified wine under the similar name, Port.

Most of Portugal’s vineyards sit along the Atlantic Ocean, which make it ideal for white wines. The main wines come from the coastal region of Vinho Verde. These wines come from Alvarinho and Loureiro grapes. Alvarinho is the Portuguese way to say Albariño, which is the same grape in Spain. Both grape varieties have lively acidity, depth of color and a round mouthfeel. These are perfect for sipping on their own on a snow day.

Consider expressions of Alvarinho from Quintas de Melgaço and Loureiro from Quintas Do Homem.

White Wines of Vinho Verde

  1. Texas

This may not seem like a top wine region. However, Texas is just outside of the top ten in the country, producing around 2 million gallons of wine as of 2024. In fact, the major region in the state is Texas Hill Country AVA, which is the third largest AVA in the country.

Texas summers are long, which allow grapes to ripen well.  Texas is most known for its bold reds. But the state also produces Viognier and Chenin Blanc, which are thick-skinned and ripen well.

Consider Pur Noire or Invention Vineyards for wines of Texas.

The cooler temperatures shouldn’t force consumers into dense, tannic red wines, unless that’s their preference. There are many white wines, from several white wine regions, that offer great options for the season. Consider these wines in future shopping lists and enjoy!
