Mauritius is more than a destination; it’s an experience that speaks to the senses and stirs the soul. From its picturesque beaches to the untamed beauty of its lush interiors, the island invites you to explore a world where every corner reveals something extraordinary.

There is something for every kind of traveller to enjoy. If you prefer to spend your days lounging in a cabana near the calm ocean, there are a brag (a lot) of resorts ready to cater to your every desire. Trek through rainforests teeming with wildlife, including over 100 bird species and rare giant tortoises.  Come to waterfalls so beautiful you’d think you were living in a dream. Should you want to explore the world hidden beneath the waves, there are enough water activities to keep you occupied. One thing is for certain, Mauritius is defined by its ability to surprise and enchant.

Here’s your guide to the best places to sleep, eat, and explore Mauritius.

Where to Stay

The island boasts some of the finest beaches in the world, with a host of hotels and resorts carving out their own slice of Paradise.

Here, intimacy meets elegance in a setting where lush gardens embrace pristine beachfront. Picture yourself in a Love Nest—a cozy, secluded spot for two overlooking the azure ocean. The hotel comes complete with four restaurants, each serving dishes that celebrate Mauritian flavors with international flair. The in-house Rum Gallery is a curated selection of the island’s finest sugarcane-based spirit.

Radisson Blu Azuri Resort & Spa
For travelers seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation, Radisson Blu is an excellent choice. Nestled along the east coast in the heart of a vibrant village, this resort provides direct access to a coral-fringed lagoon that invites snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The resort’s design complements its tropical surroundings, while its family-friendly amenities ensure that guests of all ages feel at home. Dining options range from traditional Creole cuisine to inventive international dishes. Don’t miss the on-site spa for a rejuvenating escape into the essence of island life.

Where to Eat and Drink

Resorts on the island tend to be culinary epicenters for their guests, as most opt for an all-inclusive package when booking their accommodation. However, some might appreciate a dining experience with locals.

The wine list is a curated journey, featuring an exceptional selection of local and international vintages that pair seamlessly with the bar’s Asian-inspired cuisine. How to Spend Your Time

Few destinations on the planet can rival the island’s diversity, both in geography and experiences. Known for its vibrant fusion of cultures – Indian, African, French, and Chinese – this island stands as a testament to the harmonious blending of histories, cuisines, and traditions. If you curate your itinerary well, there is more than enough to do.

Street Art in Chinatown

This vibrant hub of street art transforms the area into an open-air gallery. Wander through its bustling lanes and discover bold murals that tell stories of Mauritian heritage and Chinese influence. Created during annual art festivals like Porlwi, these works celebrate the island’s multicultural identity. Don’t miss the pieces that seamlessly merge traditional Chinese motifs with modern artistry. It reflects the unique fusion of cultures that defines Mauritius.

Seven Coloured Earths

A natural wonder that feels almost otherworldly, the Seven Coloured Earths is a breathtaking geological formation that deserves a spot on every itinerary. The dunes ripple in shades of red, brown, violet, blue, and green, a phenomenon caused by the mineral-rich volcanic soil. Best viewed in the golden hours of morning or late afternoon, the site is a photographer’s dream. Nearby, giant tortoises slowly roam the grounds, adding charm to the already stunning experience.

Crystal Rock

This striking coral outcrop rises dramatically from the lagoon, creating an iconic backdrop against the panoramic view of Le Morne Brabant Mountain. This isa UNESCO World Heritage Site worth a visit as well. Snorkelers and divers flock to the area for the vibrant marine life around the rock. Kayakers and paddleboarders can glide through the crystal-clear waters for an up-close experience. Often, boat trips to this site include a swim with dolphins on the morning breakfast run.

A visit to Crystal Rock is not just an activity—it’s a journey into one of Mauritius’ most enchanting seascapes.

Chamarel Waterfall

Crashing from a height of nearly 100 meters, Chamarel Waterfall is the highest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius and an unmissable spectacle. Set amidst dense greenery, it is framed by lush tropical vegetation that comes alive after a summer rain. You can take in the panoramic view from the observation deck or hike closer to the base to feel the mist cooling your skin. It’s a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and Instagram aficionados alike. Nearby, the Black River Gorges National Park offers trails for those who want to combine the waterfall visit with an immersive trek through Mauritius’ rich biodiversity.

When is the Best Month to Travel to Mauritius?

Mauritius is blessed with a tropical climate that offers visitors idyllic weather year-round. However, the island’s diverse offerings mean that the best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you’re seeking.

From May to December, the island enjoys its cool, dry winter season. It’s the ideal time for beachgoers, outdoor adventurers, and honeymooners alike.

For those interested in wildlife, July to September is a great time to visit as it coincides with the whale-watching season. Off the island’s west coast, you can witness the magnificent spectacle of migrating humpback and sperm whales. It’s an awe-inspiring experience that adds yet another dimension to Mauritius’ offerings.

Summer months from December to April bring higher humidity and more rain, but they also present a unique opportunity to experience the island in full bloom. However, if you’re aiming for activities like trekking or exploring inland, it’s wise to avoid the cyclone-prone months of January and February.
