Lesego Halzapfel’s venture into viticulture was driven by a deep-seated nostalgia for South African produce during her studies abroad.
“Having studied at the London School of Economics and City College, in New York, one thing I thoroughly missed while being abroad was quality South African wines,” she said.
This longing, coupled with extensive market research, culminated in the creation of Moedi Wines—designed to capture the essence of South Africa through every sip and to tell the story of the land through its labels.
The Moedi Wines Brand
Ensuring a harmonious collaboration with nature was tantamount to the brand. Agriculture is deeply intertwined with South African culture. This ethos of inclusivity and environmental preservation comes full circle with the striking wine labels. They include a honey bee – a symbol that harks back to the BeeLoved honey initiative Holzapfel supports. “There is no planet B, and it is therefore our responsibility to take care of our planet,” Holzapfel asserts.
To create the three varietals Moedi produces, Lesego partnered with Jacques Wentzel. Wentzel is a prestigious winemaker with expertise in Swartland – a dry region that produces enviable South African wine. Together, they have selected Shiraz, Rosé, and Chenin Blanc as Moedi’s flagship varietals.
“The Swartland is most popular for Shiraz and Chenin Blanc. We then decided to add Rosé of Mourvedre. It’s not indigenous to the region but thrives and obtains very unique characteristics,” Holzapfel explains. This meticulous selection underscores a commitment to quality and regional authenticity.
Systemic Challenges in South African Wine
Navigating the South African wine industry as a black woman is not without challenges. Despite the country’s rich winemaking history, the industry remains predominantly white. Her presence in this sphere serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
Holzapfel is acutely aware of the systemic barriers that black winemakers face. She advocates for greater legislative and political support to facilitate access to international markets and working capital.
“Access to international markets and working capital can assist black producers to scale up and tap into global opportunities,” she emphasizes.
This call for more inclusive policies that support the diversification of the wine industry is much needed in the South African wine industry as many winemakers are setting sights for distant shores for that reason.
Holzapfel views herself as part of this burgeoning community. She’s optimistic about the future and committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the industry.
“We believe that the country’s reputation for producing exceptional wines will continue to grow and flourish,” she says.
Moedi’s recent launches in New York and Denmark met enthusiasm. This reception is particularly rewarding as it aligns with a mission of not just satisfying consumers but making a meaningful social impact. For those eager to experience Moedi Wines, South Africans can purchase online or enjoy it at select locations in Cape Town and Hermanus. In the United States, as of August 1st, Moedi Wines will be available online via Bevstack, with more listings to follow.
Holzapfel’s journey with Moedi Wines is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to social equity. As she continues to break barriers and cultivate a new narrative for South African wine, her story serves as an inspiration to all who dare to dream and work towards a more inclusive future.
