Parasympathetic Reset: Restoring Calm to your Daily Life

Parasympathetic reset

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is responsible for many of the body’s involuntary actions. Let’s understand how to have more control.

The ANS has two parts, the parasympathetic and sympathetic. The term “fight or flight” refers to the sympathetic nervous system which responds to danger and stress. The parasympathetic nervous system helps restore calm to the body. There has been much attention and focus on parasympathetic resets due to the benefits of the practice.

A parasympathetic reset helps to activate harmony in the body by stimulating the system. Among the benefits are bringing calm to the body, better sleep, immune support and addressing root causes that can potentially decrease the risk of chronic diseases. We are all so inundated with the busyness of life that it can be difficult to keep up and practice activities that promote well-being. As a result, we end up falling into habits and routines that are not in alignment with the life we really want to lead.

However, there are several simple and effective ways to reset your parasympathetic nervous system and realign with a healthier, more balanced lifestyle:

Parasympathetic Reset Tips

  • Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity is a powerful way to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. Exercise promotes the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators, and aids in stress relief.
  • Breathing exercises: Deep, slow, and mindful breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and calmness.
  • Meditation: This practice of mindfulness can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels, promoting parasympathetic activation.
  • Laughing: Laughter is a natural stress reliever that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and well-being.
  • Getting quality sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for the proper functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system. It aids in recovery and healing processes, and promotes overall wellness.
  • Connecting with nature: Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can have a calming effect, helping to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

The benefits of the reset can include improved focus, mental clarity and strategies that can aid in managing stress more effectively. All of these factors can also support recovery and healing in our bodies, promoting wellness and a healthy lifestyle.
